2020
2020:
A year at a glance.
This was supposed to be the
Start
Of the best years
Of our lives
“2020 is gonna be my year!!
I can feel it!”
My
My
My
Did we eat those words
Death was on a rampage
The moment the calendar flipped
From 2019
To 2020
From notable figures
To those that we loved
To those that we faintly knew
Our lives shaken
To the core
Like never before
Our livelihood
Jeopardized
Our comfort
Stripped away
Life will never be the same
After this year
We ignored reality
So reality had to hit us
With the force of a MAC truck
Rattled to the bones
Maybe now
Our eyes will be opened
In 2020,
For just
2 months
We realized that
Maybe
Supposedly
Black Lives Might Matter
Possibly
Not really though
In 2020,
The reality of the racial climate
Of this nation
Of this world
Poured through our eye gates
Like a tropical storm
The little innocence we had left
Washed away
With the tears of pain
Anguish
And realization
In 2020,
Our governments
Showed their true colors
Lekki Toll Gate Massacre
Uyghur concentration camps
Failed pandemic relief
Permissive molestation of the police force
On the country’s citizens
Just to name a few
2020
Did not open the new decade
The way any of us had hoped
But despite all the loss
There was so much to gain
Many of us
Began to cherish
The meaning of
Life
The value it had
The imminence of it being taken
Away
I hope this year
Served as a reminder to each
And every one of us
Of the importance of life
Of the importance of community
Of the importance of the struggle
Of the importance of the revolution
Of the importance of perseverance
Of the importance of change
Of the importance of love
2020 was a “wake up call”
Let’s see if we don’t
Fall asleep
Again...
